Airbus Helicopters has said it is well placed to ride out the effects of the Covid-19 global pandemic, but expects the impact to be felt in 2022 as the order backlog is reduced.

<img src=”[images%7COpenAccessDataProvider]454fa26c-b4ab-4db8-b487-da2770137ae7?sfvrsn=2be4ef33_2″ alt=”A downturn in Super Puma sales in particular could have ramifications for Airbus Helicopters’ Marignane plant in southern France, according to the company’s CEO. (Airbus Helicopters)”><p class=”text-body text-sm-center text-muted small” style=”text-align:center;”>A downturn in Super Puma sales in particular could have ramifications for Airbus Helicopters’ Marignane plant in southern France, according to the company’s CEO. (Airbus Helicopters)

Speaking to
Janes
and other media on 26 January, Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even said that as current production is supported by orders placed in previous years and ongoing French government support, there should be no immediate effect on output. However, as these orders reach completion through 2021, he anticipates a relative shortfall in 2022.

“All orders confirmed before the crisis are being followed through, and this shows trust in Airbus Helicopters,” Even said. “2022 will be a challenge, where the impact will begin.” He noted that the company’s Marignane plant in southern France is especially vulnerable due to its reliance on the Super Puma range of helicopters, for which 2020 sales were down compared with previous years.

The EU is now operationally testing its concept for Co-ordinated Maritime Presences (CMP): a new co-operative tool for exchanging maritime picture data and analyses among national navies of the EU in designated areas of interest. The CMP pilot project was launched on 25 January in the Gulf of Guinea region.

“The Gulf of Guinea is an area of high interest for the EU,” Josep Borrell, the EU’s chief official for security and defence policy, told reporters via a telebriefing after a 25 January meeting of EU foreign ministers, who approved the launch. “Several [EU] member states are already present in the region and will share information and analysis at sea, while co-operating with the Gulf’s coastal countries to address the region’s increasing security problems,” he added.

A vast region with 6,000 km of coastline stretching from Senegal to Angola, the Gulf of Guinea is riddled with security problems, ranging from piracy to illegal fishing and arms trafficking. On any given day about 1,500 fishing vessels, tankers, and cargo ships navigate its waters. In 2020 alone, for example, it suffered 84 attacks on ships, with 135 seafarers kidnapped for ransom. According to the International Maritime Bureau, the region now accounts for 95% of all ransom kidnappings at sea.

“Piracy, armed robbery at sea, kidnapping of seafarers, illegal fishing, smuggling and trafficking, and transnational organised crime pose a major threat to maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and ultimately to the economic development of the entire region,” the EU said in a statement announcing the CMP’s launch.

Donald Trump’s hopes of avoiding conviction by the US Senate were strengthened on Tuesday when 45 Republicans tried to dismiss his impeachment trial before it even began.

After they were sworn in and signed the oath book – each using a different pen owing to coronavirus precautions – Rand Paul of Kentucky challenged the legitimacy of the trial.

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic majority leader, dismissed Paul’s theory as ‘flat-out wrong’

US lawmakers have sliced procurement dollars from the army’s Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) programme, and a newly released Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) report backs up some of their concerns about potential operational roadblocks. However, the service told Janes that most of the identified faults either had been addressed or will be fixed before the militarised heads-up display is fielded.

Each January, the Pentagon’s DOT&E releases a report detailing testing activities from the previous year. In the most recent report, the office unveils findings from soldier touchpoint 2 that occurred in October and November 2019. During that event, soldiers used a non-militarised, non-ruggedised version of Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 augmented reality (AR) system at Fort Pickett, Virginia. DOT&E cited several problems with this capability set 2 prototype, including with the GPS to imagery sensors.

“We agree with DOT&E test report and welcome the feedback, constant collaboration and transparency in the programme,” Lieutenant Colonel Brad Winn, the Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team’s IVAS lead, wrote in a 26 January statement to Janes .

“Nothing took us by surprise. Negative feedback on some capabilities was expected, because we used a commercial HoloLens device that was not yet ruggedized,” he later added. “The focus of CS2 [capability set 2] was the integration phase of the programme, and the integration activities informed the approach to capability sets 3 and 4.”

More specifically, DOT&E reported that soldiers using the capability set 2 prototype sometimes experienced problems with commercial GPS accuracy, which lead to inaccurate position location information. Then, at night, “poor low light and thermal sensor performance prevented some operational navigation activities”.

<img src=”[images%7COpenAccessDataProvider]3e7640b3-1b45-4b1d-8bee-04ebaeb18f26?sfvrsn=21330b88_2″ alt=”Soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division use the latest IVAS prototype during a training exercise in October 2020.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) – one of the country’s most important defence industrial enterprises – has reported strong financial growth for 2020, it announced on 26 January. The state-owned corporation said that its 2020 revenues increased year on year by 7% to CNY267.74 billion (USD41.4 billion) and that its total profit in the year was CNY24.22 billion, a rise of 11.7% from the previous year.

<img src=”[images%7COpenAccessDataProvider]82217db4-3c3e-4f9c-b789-1c4996750e13?sfvrsn=a21f323b_2″ alt=”The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) – manufacturer of the CH-5 multi-role MALE UAV (pictured) – has reported strong financial growth for 2020. (Janes/Kelvin Wong)

CASC added that during the past year its “labour productivity” increased by 9.5%, its investment in “innovation development” activities was CNY1.96 billion, and that it had consolidated group assets worth CNY640 million. CASC said in a statement that its financial results were notable, given new challenges in the year.

“In 2020 the group went through an extraordinary development process,” said CASC in a statement. “The group overcome a complex international situation and the sudden impact of Covid-19 … to achieve major achievements in supporting the development of a world-class military.”

CASC also said that its yearly performance was aligned with the expansion it had achieved under China’s 13th Five Year Plan (FYP) during 2016 to the end of 2020. During these five years, it said, its revenues reached CNY1.2 trillion – or an average of CNY240 billion a year – and its total profits were more than CNY100 billion.
