Robert Kennedy Jr. blames CIA for JFK assassination, fueling controversial claim

Democratic White House contender Robert Kennedy Jr. blames the CIA for the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination of his uncle, President John F. Kennedy — proclaiming it “beyond a reasonable doubt.” Kennedy made the bombshell accusation about a murder that’s spun many conspiracy theories during an interview Sunday with John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM’s “Cats […]

Harden makes winning 3 in OT, 76ers tie series with Celtics

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — James Harden hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in overtime and scored 42 points to help the Philadelphia 76ers stave off a wild Boston Celtics comeback in a 116-115 victory on Sunday that evened their playoff series at 2-2.

Marcus Smart’s potential winner was a tick too late and the Celtics now head home for Tuesday’s Game 5. The 76ers are guaranteed to return home for Game 6 on Thursday.

Smart and Jayson Tatum keyed a Celtics rally from 15 points down with 2 minutes left in the third quarter in hopes of seizing control of the series.

The Sixers were on the brink of defeat numerous times over the final 17 minutes, none more than when Joel Embiid crashed into Smart on a driving, one-handed bank shot with 1:49 left but was whistled for an offensive foul. The play was reviewed and the call stood. Boston kept its 112-111 lead with 1:49 left in OT.

Embiid, the NBA MVP, kept his composure and eventually got to the line to sink two free throws with 59 seconds left and the season in the balance.

Embiid had 34 points and 13 rebounds. Harden added nine assists and eight rebounds.

Tatum struggled to score early but finished with 24 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Jaylen Brown scored 23 points and Smart had 21.

They went to overtime tied 107-all after Smart was short on a 3 at the horn on one of the few clutch shots Boston missed in the fourth quarter.

Boston’s fun began in the period when Smart and Brown buried consecutive 3-pointers and Tatum attacked the rim for a bucket that wiped out an eight-point hole in 90 seconds. Al Horford put them ahead 98-90 — on a possession that started on the other end when Tyrese Maxey had his shot blocked — and shimmied for the crowd as boos rained on him.

Yes, the 76ers had home court but fans tensed up as memories all those second-round exits since 2001 stirred inside the building. Smart and Malcolm Brogdon hit consecutive 3s for a 105-100 lead.

But it was P.J. Tucker, the heart and guts of the Sixers, who again did the dirty work on a defensive rebound a bucket. He made the free throw with 1:05 left and the tie game gave them new life.

Good Game James showed up in Game 4 for the 76ers and Embiid played more like the MVP he was in the regular season than the banged-up edition with a sprained right knee of the last two games.

Harden played in Game 1 like he was still the MVP in Houston and dropped 45 points to spur the upset road victory. Then, his game disappeared and he played two of the worst games of his career. Harden’s 5-for-28 combined shooting in Games 2 and 3 was worst effort for him over any two-game span in his career — regular season or playoffs.

The best the 76ers could do ahead of Game 4 was hope for a productive Harden.

Philly got him.

Harden hit all three 3s in the first half and scored 21 points, five more than his Game 3 total. Embiid was as potent as he needed to perform and had 19 points and 11 boards to give the 76ers a 59-50 lead.

Boston suffered this time from a lack of star power. Tatum missed his first eight shots before he scored a bucket just before the half, just one woeful effort in a half where the Celtics shot 38% from the floor.

TIP-INS

Celtics: Horford joined Tatum as Celtics with one basket in the first half. Brown tried to help with a 7-of-11 effort for 16 points.

76ers: Julius Erving was in the house. … Embiid and Harden are the first Sixers teammates with 30 points each in a playoff game since Embiid and Seth Curry did it in June 2021 against Atlanta.

Chile right-wing parties win majority in vote to draft new constitution

2023-05-08T02:26:55Z

Chilean right-wing parties won a majority of votes on Sunday to elect advisers to draft a new constitution, marking a sharp shift from a progressive majority that drafted a failed first constitutional rewrite.

With 95.13% of ballots tallied, Chile’s Republican Party, led by former conservative firebrand presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast, secured nearly 35% of the vote.

A separate coalition of traditional right-wing parties gained just over 20% of the vote, while President Gabriel Boric’s left-wing coalition garnered about 29%. Centrist parties took the remainder of the vote.

“Today is the first day of a better future, a new start for Chile,” Kast, who lost to Boric in 2021, said during a speech in Santiago. “Chile has defeated a failed government.”

The final results will determine the exact make-up of a 50-seat Constitutional Council that will be in charge of drafting a new constitution. Articles will need a three-fifths majority to be approved.

This is the latest step in a years-long effort to overhaul the country’s dictatorship-era text after nearly 80% of Chileans voted to draft a new constitution in 2020 following violent protests against inequality.

The constitutional advisers elected on Sunday will start drawing up a new constitution in June based on a draft compiled by 24 constitutional experts appointed by Congress in March. Voters will then approve or reject the new proposal in December.

The first rewrite was drafted by largely independent and left-wing constituents and it focused on social benefits, environmental rights, gender parity and indigenous rights.

It was considered one of the world’s most progressive constitutions, but many voters found it too polarizing and the process was mired by controversies.

Boric, who took office last March, rose to power on a wave of optimism surrounding reform, but his approval ratings have since plummeted as a struggling economy and rising crime have become the main concerns for voters.

Boric also suffered a political defeat after throwing his weight behind the first rewrite, which was rejected by nearly 62% of voters. The president has since distanced himself from the process but vowed to support it.

“The government won’t meddle with the process and will respect the entity’s autonomy in its deliberation,” Boric told reporters Sunday morning after voting, adding that the government would act as a guarantor and support requests from the new council.

After Kast’s victory speech, Boric spoke from La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago and called for unity and urged the opposition to learn from the previous failed attempt.

“I want to invite the Republican Party, that’s won an unquestionable majority, to not make the same mistakes we made,” Boric said. “This process can’t be about vendettas, but putting Chile first.”

The people were waiting. All over the country, journalists, political pundits, lobbyists, politicians — all were poised, waiting for the great one to show up. It seemed like years they’d been waiting. He was the one though. And many of them couldn’t hide their excitement.

For he had come! He’d ridden in on his white horse, a true prince charming politics style, waiting to snatch them from the jaws of defeat! And defeat was what hovered in their minds, unrelenting, refusing to let them get a good night’s sleep.

“What if we lose?” some of them wondered in silent panic. “What if he screws it all up again?” The “he” was Donald Trump. You see, Trump had announced his candidacy, and many Republicans didn’t like it at all.

So now they waited. For HIM. The anointed one, the person the media had breathlessly talked up for MONTHS. Their savior — Ron DeSantis. They waited — and waited and waited. As the months went by, little wrinkles of worry, of malcontent, began to appear in their souls. They watched as their hero DeSantis did NOT announce. Instead, he went after Mickey Mouse.

Again. Again. And again. As more and more stories began to come out about some of the peculiar eating habits of their chosen one, more metaphorical wrinkles began to appear. AND THEN Disney sued him. And then he sued Disney. Around and around the merry-go-round went.

But wait! Reports were he was going to announce! Ronny had something to say! And the people dropped their worries for a bit. They were relieved and hoped maybe Ronny would still come through. And in an interview with NewsMax that aired Friday, DeSantis made his announcement.

I’m sure many tuned in. They knew the interview would be on. And they could get to hear their glorious savior offer validation of the long months of waiting. So along came Friday. And DeSantis did make an exciting announcement! And this stirring and mind-boggling declaration was — that Mickey Mouse hadn’t “made a peep” since he started his retaliation.

Crash! I’m sure there were PLENTY of dishes flying through the air on Friday. The people watched in shock as Ron proceeded to make almost the whole interview about the mouse whom he said he had beaten. “They have not made a peep,” Ron bragged about his soulmate.

He then went on to talk profoundly about what the whole Disney fight means to him as astonishment washed over Twitter:

“The mouse has destroyed him.”

“Is Ron cracking up?”

“Maybe he should ask Mickey to be his VEEP.”

Sigh. Another week, another speech about Disney. It does appear these crestfallen Republicans have lost their hero to the mouse.
