Biden Admin Opens Probe Into DOD Handling of Intelligence Following Leak

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Thursday ordered his department to review how it handles intelligence in the wake of a massive document leak detailing U.S. actions in Ukraine and spying on its allies.

Ronald Moultrie, undersecretary of defense for intelligence and security, will head the probe following the arrest of 21-year-old Jack Teixeira, a National Guard airman accused of leaking top secret documents to a Discord group chat.

Teixeira is charged with unauthorized removal of classified documents. A hearing is set for Wednesday to decide if he will be detained awaiting trial.

The Department will “conduct a review of our intelligence access, accountability and control procedures within the Department to inform our efforts to prevent this kind of incident from happening again,” Austin said.

“I will also not hesitate to take any additional measures necessary to safeguard our nation’s secrets,” Austin said in a statement. “The Department of Defense, in close partnership with the Intelligence Community and our interagency partners, will continue to review the national security implications of this unauthorized disclosure.”

The leaks showed vulnerabilities in the Ukrainian military, evidence of the United States spying on Israel and other allies, and details on Russian infighting.
